- What is Groki?
- Groki is a web-based AI meme generator at groki.meme. It combines a library of over 100 meme templates with AI-written captions, realistic face swap, and image-to-video animation. Memes are created in a browser canvas editor and exported as HD PNG, or as MP4 when animated.
- Is Groki free to use?
- Yes. A Groki account is free and includes 20 welcome credits, with no credit card required. Credits are only consumed by AI features. Browsing templates, editing text, positioning captions and exporting a meme do not cost credits on Groki.
- How much does Groki cost?
- Groki has a free tier with 20 welcome credits. Paid plans are Starter at $4.99 per month for 550 credits per month, and Connoisseur at $14.99 per month for 1,800 credits per month. One-time credit bundles are also available at 100 credits per $1, with no subscription. All plans can be cancelled at any time.
- How many credits does each AI feature use?
- On Groki, AI caption generation costs 1 credit. A face swap costs 12 credits. Animating a meme into a 5-second video costs 30 credits. The 20 free welcome credits cover roughly one face swap plus several AI captions.
- Which AI models does Groki use?
- Groki uses Grok from xAI to write meme captions and recommend templates, Flux 2 Pro Edit via Fal.ai for face swap, and PixVerse v4.5 for image-to-video animation.
- Can I create memes from ChatGPT or Claude?
- Yes. Groki exposes an authenticated MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, so any MCP-compatible AI assistant such as Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor can create memes directly from a conversation. You connect the account once, then ask the assistant for a meme; it returns three private drafts and an editor link. Setup instructions are at groki.meme/agents.
- Does Groki put a watermark on memes?
- Memes exported from Groki on the free tier carry a small "made with groki.meme" mark in the bottom-right corner. Subscribers on any paid Groki plan can turn it off in Account settings for completely clean exports.
- Do I own the memes I create with Groki?
- Yes. Memes you create on Groki are yours to use, including commercially, subject to the rights attached to the underlying template and to any image you upload. Memes in Groki are private by default and only appear in the public Explore feed if you choose to publish them.
- Can I make an animated meme or meme video?
- Yes. In Groki, any static meme can be animated into a 5-second MP4 video using PixVerse v4.5, for 30 credits. Your caption text is composited into every frame of the final video, so the text stays editable until you render.
- Does Groki work on mobile?
- Yes. Groki runs in a mobile browser and the canvas editor adapts to phone and tablet screen sizes. No app install is required.
- How is Groki different from Imgflip or Kapwing?
- Imgflip is a large template library with a simple caption editor. Kapwing is a general video editor that also does memes. Groki is narrower and more AI-native: captions are written by an LLM that reads the template context, faces can be swapped into templates realistically, static memes can be turned into video, and the whole thing is callable from an AI assistant over MCP.
- Can I use my own photo in a meme?
- Yes. In Groki you can upload a photo and swap the face into a template using the face swap feature, for 12 credits. You can also import your own image as the meme background instead of using a Groki template.
